Captchas are a wonderful thing right? Well when you have ones like I’ve shown above, it can be quite annoying to register for a site.
I do believe that they help website owners keep alot of spam away from their sites, but I think there are much better options. For instance, as a blogger, there are spam blocking widgets for Wordpress, and you could always make users login to post a comment first, but that won’t always stop spammers and can cause you to lose valuable comments.
Either way captchas aren’t even that effective. I can’t remember where, but I read that someone had already found a way to essentially “hack” Yahoo!’s captcha. If that has already been done, then who’s to say even the rediculous captchas are hacker proof.
I think that John M Willis summed it up pretty good with his post about the Top 10 Worst Captchas.
